Traveling back in time

First a little movie review:

Vic and I went to see The Butler the day it came out. The theater wasn't packed but it wasn't empty either. It was a early afternoon showing and for that time of day I was surprised at how many people actually were there.  I wasn't sure what to expect but I was surprised how emotional the movie was for me. I think I fought back tears through half of the movie..I let them flow the other half. It reminded me of how I felt when we went to see The Help..the only difference was The Help had some comedic relief.

I was not the only one. I heard sniffles from the people around me. When it was over there was clapping ..and when we walked out the doors there was a line of people waiting to get in for the next showing.  I'm very glad I went. The movie was rich in history.  The actors/actresses in the movie were excellent. It was hard to get the person I know from TV as Oprah out of my head and connect to her character in the movie but I did.

Then some history:

When my dad was dying and we were going through  his things, he came across some letters and a journal of the summer he went on a youth mission (1961) he was telling me about the buses he was on and how they  had to make sure they were not confused with the freedom riders because it was during that time period. I was listening but only soaking in bits and pieces of what he was saying. My heart was breaking after all, knowing why we were going through  his things , wondering if I'd ever be able to look through these boxes again.

Recently I have been working on my family tree. It's been six months now since my father passed. I have looked at the pictures and trinkets in the boxes that we packed up that day last winter. I found the booklet all about his youth mission study tour and want to share it with you.
